Wood properties of loblolly pine grown under intensive management in the Upper Coastal Plain of southwest Georgia

چکیده

Loblolly pine ( Pinus taeda L.) productivity over the past century has increased significantly from genetic improvements and more intensive management practices. The current study concludes a series of assessments loblolly growth/physiological responses to continuous resource treatments weed control (W), plus irrigation (WI), fertigation (WIF). Increment cores were analyzed by X-ray densitometry assess treatment impacts on wood properties. Plotting property data against assigned years allowed results be compared with available weather data. Mean values for all determinations similar between W WI treatments. Increased ring width WIF was consistent other studies demonstrating substantial increases in fertilization. Since decreases specific gravity (SG) fertilization can offset SG irrigation, gains achieved without reducing quality.

Radial growth trends of loblolly pine in the Virginia Coastal Plain

A number of recent studies have shown reduced individual-tree growth throughout the 1970s and early 1980s in natural loblolly pine (Pinus raeda L.) stands in the southeastern United States. This study updates radial growth trends of loblolly pine in the Virginia Coastal Plain through 1989. Ring-width series were initially grouped into two age-classes (~50 or 150 years) and a clustering procedur...

Thermomechanical Pulping of Loblolly Pine Juvenile Wood

Intensive forest management, with a heavy emphasis on ecosystem management and restoring or maintaining forest health, will result in the removal of smaller diameter materials from the forest. This increases the probability of higher juvenile wood content in the harvested materials. The purpose of this study was to compare the performance of loblolly pine juvenile and mature wood unbleached the...

Response of carbon fluxes to drought in a coastal plain loblolly pine forest

Full accounting of ecosystem carbon (C) pools and fluxes in coastal plain ecosystems remains less studied compared with upland systems, even though the C stocks in these systems may be up to an order of magnitude higher, making them a potentially important component in regional C cycle. Here, we report C pools and CO2 exchange rates during three hydrologically contrasting years (i.e. 2005–2007)...
